Forty-Eight Hands

The shijuhatte (forty-eight hands) is a collective term for the sexual positions systematised in Edo-period Japan. The count of 48 traces back to Hishikawa Moronobu's Koi no mutsugoto shijuhatte (c. 1678) and the convention spread through later pillow books. The number is symbolic — borrowed from the count of sumo winning techniques — and different editions list anywhere from 48 to 120 positions.

Below, the most frequently cited positions are arranged into 10 groups following modern scholarship (Hayashi Yoshikazu, Edo Enpon Kenkyū; Shirakura Yoshihiko, Shunga no Mikata). Cards with a link go to full English articles; cards without a link are not yet translated.

本手系 ― 対面正常型の系統

対面・男性上位の正常型を基本とし、抱き合い方や腰位置の違いで派生する系統。

茶臼系 ― 対面騎乗の系統

女性が上にまたがる対面騎乗(現代の騎乗位)。 江戸艶本では中核的な画題。

返し系 ― 屈曲・反転の系統

被挿入側を仰向けに反らせる、あるいは脚を頭側に折り返す可動性の高い形。

松葉系 ― 開脚・側位の系統

片脚を高く挙げ、上体は対面のまま腰だけ斜めにする半側位の系統。

鳥・舟系 ― 諧謔的命名の代表

鳥や舟など自然物に擬えた諧謔的命名群。 江戸艶本の遊芸性を象徴する。

車系 ― 脚を高く挙げる系統

脚を抱え、車輪を回すように動かす形象的命名群。

首・顔系 ― 上体接触型

頸部や顔面の接触を主題化した独立性の強い系統。

工芸・道具系 ― 手仕事に擬える

機織り・帆柱・縛りなど、職人の手仕事や舟具に擬える工芸的命名群。

立技系 ― 立位の系統

立った姿勢で行う体位群。 立ち本手から派生した諸変化。

その他系 ― 独立した名づけ

上記の系統に属しにくい、独立した固有命名の体位群。
