A weekday late night in Roppongi, four men lined up at the counter of a privately booked sushi place. Two women summoned by app arrive exactly on time. From the toast onward, two hours of light talk, food, photos and steady laughter. After the bill, the hourly fee auto-debits from the men’s card, and a “thanks for tonight” notice reaches the women’s phones. No sexual contact; exchanging contacts is each party’s choice. This is gyara-nomi.

Gyara-nomi (ギャラ飲み, “paid drinking”) is the general term for a trade in which, via a dedicated matching app or agent, a male customer pays an hourly fee to share a few hours of food and drink with women. Services such as Pato appeared around 2017, settling into urban entertainment districts as a middle zone between the hostess club and compensated dating.

How the form works

Participating women complete identity verification, photo registration and a self-introduction on the app in advance, while men send offers and meet the accepted party. The fee runs roughly 5,000 to 10,000 yen an hour, with three to four hours standard. Payment is mainly in-app card processing; direct cash exchange in principle does not occur. Holding no premises, the parties meet outside, joining at an eatery the man has arranged.

Under the Amusement Business Act, because there are no premises and no in-store hospitality, the form in principle operates outside “sex-related business”. But if the parties agree to sexual service, it can violate the Anti-Prostitution Law, and operators take the rule-level premise of banning all sexual contact. In practice, an “after” (an extension following the drinks) developing individually is common, but on the surface that is treated as “a private matter between individuals”.

History

The origin traces to the early 2010s. Around 2014, semi-underground services dispatching “women who gather friends” via agents existed for affluent men in central Tokyo. The app version was Pato’s 2017 launch, after which services proliferated. Behind it lay the match between the high premises cost of the hostess club and young women’s demand to “earn in short stints without being tied to a shop”. Working as a hostess involves shift management, quotas and hair-and-makeup costs, while gyara-nomi lets a woman choose time and partner with just her phone. A double life of office work or study by day and single night participation became possible, and side-job entrants increased.

When shop-based night work shut down en masse in the 2020 pandemic, gyara-nomi, holding no premises, suffered relatively little and even gained inflow. The post-2022 price rises and falling real wages of the young provided a further tailwind, and registered women are said to have reached the hundreds of thousands.

Difference from compensated dating

Where compensated dating is based on “holding a continuing relationship with a particular man and receiving a monthly allowance”, gyara-nomi is decisively “a single few-hour stint, completed by the hour”. Compensated dating is close to pseudo-romance or a mistress relationship, carrying maintenance cost, while gyara-nomi is purified into a short transaction that does not carry the relationship forward.

The frequency of sexual contact differs too. Compensated dating often implies an “adult relationship” (a sexual one), with a physical relationship woven into the monthly allowance in most cases. Gyara-nomi in principle includes no sexual service, with a host-like “conversation-and-company service” as the premise. Both, however, are grey zones, and no clear line exists.

Structure of reception

Men’s motives, “to make the table lively with friends”, “to meet several women in a short time”, function as a substitute for group dates and marriage-hunting. Those seeking sexual service flow to clearer delivery health or soapland, so gyara-nomi holds its own position as “a tool for staging a night’s dining”.

Women’s motives are short-stint high income and a freedom that shop trades lack. Because the hourly rate varies with looks, talk and self-production, affinity with SNS is high, and a tier using Instagram follower counts as a weapon to secure high rates has emerged.
