A weekday evening, the doorbell. A woman tutor steps in with a “pardon the intrusion,” her slim frame, footsteps down the hall, a few dozen centimetres of distance seated across the desk in the study. The parents are out at work; only the two are home. A pale arm reaching in from the side to peer at the textbook, hair seen over the shoulder, a soft scent that is not perfume. The serious face during the lesson, and the chest opening as she bends slightly to write an answer. Unlike the female teacher at school, the closeness of the private home changes the terrain of the relationship. The genre is fiction, and every character is a consenting adult.

Overview

The private-tutor genre (家庭教師もの, kateikyōshi-mono) is the umbrella term for adult fiction with an adult tutor, a woman visiting a student’s home or a man visiting a student, as the lead. This article treats it as a situation genre across AV, adult manga, and eroge. All characters are depicted as adults.

The genre is a sub-genre derived from and made independent of the female-teacher genre. Where the school-teacher genre is set in school spaces, classroom, staff room, storeroom, the private-tutor genre is set in the student’s home, and this shift of stage changes the narrative device fundamentally. In school space the student is one of a group and the teacher an authority; in the home the student is a private being and the tutor an outsider invited in from beyond. The sequence of “entering the house,” “stepping into the room,” “lining up desks” itself creates a special closeness of relationship.

Narrative device

The core is the line of action of the “visit”: removing shoes at the entrance, greeting the parents, being shown to the room, sitting at lined-up desks, this staged entry is placed in the narrative’s front section, with the framing decided by whether the parents are home, whether there are siblings, and which room is used. Time settings such as “the hours the parents are out,” “the hours before dinner,” or “a late-night lesson” structure the situation of the two being alone. Unlike the school teacher, the tutor occupies the peculiar position of “a stranger in the house who is neither family nor friend,” and that position supplies the narrative pretext for sexual approach.

The lesson scene is a one-on-one across a desk: peering at a textbook together, watching the student’s hand from behind, an arm reaching over the shoulder to write an answer, this “contact for the sake of instruction” forms the basis of the screen composition. The closed-room one-on-one, unlike a group lesson, makes the necessity and the forbiddenness of contact stand at once, sharing the device of “correcting form,” “correcting grip,” “correcting posture” with the sports-trainer genre. The tutor is also a being dispatched under a monetary contract with the parents: it is the parent, not the student, who pays. This triangle (parent, student, tutor) structures the ethical tension, the figure of “the one the parent trusted” being led astray, or “a relationship kept secret from the parent,” producing a taboo specific to the genre.

Narrative types

The most frequent pattern has a young woman tutor instructing an (adult) male student: a university-student part-timer, a new woman lecturer, an acquaintance from her time as a teacher. The student’s one-sided affection, the tutor’s wavering between instruction and feeling, and the debt felt toward the parents shape the development. In commercial AV the standard is performers aged eighteen or over playing “the tutor’s role” and “the student’s role.” A reverse pattern has a male tutor instructing a (adult) female student; this type is operated with especially strict age confirmation, and the commercial standard depicts an adult (university student, rep-school student). A reunion type, in which a former student meets the tutor again as an adult, connects to the reunion genre: a line that could not be crossed then can be crossed now that both are adults, a time structure that adds depth.

Adjacent genres

The female-teacher genre is the closest neighbour; the stage differs (school versus home), but the costume signs (suit, blouse, tight skirt) and the device (sexualisation of the instructing relation) overlap. It crosses with the older-sister fantasy and, from the student’s viewpoint, carries the structure of “longing for an older tutor.” Within the broad occupational category, the private-tutor genre shares the device of “a closed visited space” with house-call and clinic-visit work, and shares the structure of converting an instructing relation into a sexual one with the sports-trainer and idol-producer genres.

Reception

The central appeal lies in concretising, in narrative space, the “longing for a tutor” that one could potentially hold in one’s own (adult-recalled) student days. Unlike the school teacher, the tutor is a stranger who comes into the private space of the home, and the threshold of the relationship is set low from the start, so the viewer receives the setting immediately within memory or imagination. It connects to the role-play and cosplay sensibility, the tutor’s suit, collared blouse, and instructional glasses functioning independently as standard costume-fetish motifs.
