Hentai Word Dictionary

From the era of renting and buying AV one title at a time on FANZA, to an era where a few thousand yen a month makes a catalogue all-you-can-watch. Carried by the growth of subscription users, the centre of Japanese AV distribution shifted from DVD sales and one-off purchase to monthly streaming, and a symbolic group of services marks that shift: H!NEXT and its successors.

H!NEXT (current name “FANZA Mihodai ch Light / Premium”) is the former and related name of the monthly flat-rate AV streaming service that DMM and FANZA have operated. This entry covers its origins, place in the AV subscription market, shift to current services, and market role.

Overview

H!NEXT is a subscription service where a fixed monthly fee gives unlimited viewing of target AV works. Operated by FANZA (formerly DMM Adult), it offers flat-rate viewing, a catalogue of tens of thousands of titles (varying by period), viewing on PC, smartphone and smart TV, and exclusion of some new releases and solo-actress works from the flat-rate scope.

The “H!NEXT” name varied in use by period, and is now organised as a tiered subscription group: “FANZA Mihodai ch Light” and “FANZA Mihodai ch Premium”.

Origins and service changes

DMM began adult video streaming in 1999 and ran one-off-purchase and rental forms through the 2000s. The monthly flat-rate service launched in the 2010s, changing name and content in stages: “DMM Mihodai ch”, “H!NEXT”, and “FANZA Mihodai ch”. When DMM.R18 became “FANZA” in 2018, the flat-rate service moved toward unification under “FANZA Mihodai”. The H!NEXT name was phased out as a service name, but is still referred to as a former name within the industry and among users.

Place in the AV subscription market

Japanese AV distribution passed through 1980s VHS package sales, 1990s DVD sales, and 2000s rental and one-off purchase, before monthly flat-rate became the mainstream form from the 2010s. This rested on the contraction of DVD and package sales, a consumer shift toward flat-rate, and the build-out of smartphone viewing.

H!NEXT and its successors functioned as the core platform of this transition. The convenience of accessing a large catalogue for a few thousand yen a month appealed strongly, and flat-rate membership grew to a scale said to run from the hundreds of thousands into the millions.

Effect on market structure

The spread of flat-rate streaming greatly changed the AV industry’s revenue structure. On the maker side, where the one-off model depended on “high-unit-price sale of a single hit”, the flat-rate model bases earnings on “view-linked distribution”. On production, with per-title unit price falling, pressure builds toward increasing the number of works. On actress branding, the division between flat-rate-included and excluded (premium) works affects labelling and branding strategy.

Since the AV Act (2022), the legal mandating of performer contracts and publication-suspension periods has affected flat-rate platform line-ups, with some existing works taken off streaming for compliance.

Besides FANZA, monthly flat-rate services include maker-direct subscriptions and overseas Netflix-style AV streaming (such as Pornhub Premium). In the Japanese market, the FANZA-line flat-rate service holds the largest share as a maker-crossing comprehensive platform.
