Hentai Word Dictionary

You open the page of an artist you had been watching on pixiv. Below the latest work, a small “FANBOX” banner offers roughs, scrapped drawings and work-in-progress from a 500-yen monthly plan. Variant art that never made it into the published work, and the artist’s in-progress roughs, flow through. The sight of the artist’s own hand, invisible in the finished piece alone, is what triggers the payment.

pixivFANBOX (often FANBOX) is the monthly creator-support platform that pixiv Inc., operator of the illustration network pixiv, has provided since April 2018. This entry covers its origins, revenue model, handling of adult expression, comparison with Fantia and myfans, and its place within the pixiv ecosystem.

Overview

FANBOX lets a creator issue several monthly plans, freely setting names, prices and perks, while supporters subscribe to a plan of choice for continuing support. Posts are gated per plan, with higher plans unlocking more posts, in a tiered structure.

Ninety percent of support goes to the creator, with the remaining 10 percent as platform and payment fees (as of 2024). Among subscription bases this is a low fee rate, which strongly appealed to the pixiv artist base.

Origins

pixiv, an illustration network opened in 2007, had by the late 2010s become the largest base for Japanese illustrators and doujin creators. Yet the free-viewing model made monetisation hard, and even popular artists found it did not translate into income.

In April 2018, pixiv launched FANBOX as a monthly-support platform premised on pixiv integration, referencing Patreon (2013, US). One could log in with a pixiv account, and a path from the pixiv profile to FANBOX displayed, an integrated design that was its hallmark.

Handling of adult expression

Because the operator depends heavily on the Japanese card-payment network, FANBOX applies relatively strict guidelines to sexual expression. Direct depiction of genitals and sex acts, child sexualisation, and excessive violence are prohibited or restricted. R-18 posting is possible, but at the same level as pixiv proper, and uncensored eromanga or photographs cannot be handled.

Creators wanting looser sexual expression therefore tend to move to Fantia, DLsite or Gumroad. Across 2022 to 2023, under tightened international card-brand screening, FANBOX updated its guidelines, and cases of restricted R-18 posting drew dissatisfaction from artists and supporters.

Comparison with rival platforms

FANBOX’s typical user is a pixiv-resident illustrator or doujin creator, and the main use is publishing the production process or sharing unfinished drafts of derivative and original work. Fantia by contrast permits looser sexual expression and is open to cosplayer and live-action support. myfans is geared toward live-action former AV actresses and gravure talent, premised on handling sexual content. Within that, FANBOX holds the niche of “pixiv-integrated illustration-creation support”.

Economic role

FANBOX’s role in the domestic creator economy was to provide a base where an artist who gained recognition on pixiv could convert that reputation into monthly revenue. Top artists earning annual support in the millions to tens of millions of yen emerged, and cases of making a living as a full-time doujin creator or illustrator increased.

The distribution of support is extremely skewed, with the top 1 percent of artists taking most of the total, a structure shared with other creator-economy platforms.
