The studio is a one-room apartment, the camera a single mirrorless body, the editor free DaVinci Resolve, the outlets FANZA Doujin and myfans. The cast is the creator and a partner, or the creator, a partner, and an acquaintance. The credits carry no company name, only a one-line handle that reads like a circle name. Yet a single sale brings in about the value of one cut from a studio title, straight to the creator’s account with no one in between.

Independent adult content sales is the umbrella term for the form in which an individual or small group self-contains planning, shooting, editing, and sales, distributing explicit content directly without a studio or agency. It expanded in the 2010s as an alternative to the industrial production system of AV studios, and since the 2022 AV Act its presence has grown further.

Term and scope

The label “personal sales” goes back to the era of selling self-produced POV (hamedori) DVDs directly at events and by mail order, without a distributor. With the build-out of internet sales platforms, it expanded into an umbrella covering three strands: single-item sale of recorded video and photo sets; live-streaming-centred distribution; and continuing sale through monthly memberships.

Against industrial production, a studio title divides script, cast, studio, editing staff, packaged sale, and distribution as an industrial product, whereas personal sales has the shooter and performer as nearly the same person, with editing done in-house and distribution uploaded directly to a platform. The defining difference from commercial AV is that the performer is also the seller.

Distribution platforms

For single-item sales, FANZA Doujin, DLsite, Gcolle, and BOOTH serve as the outlets. FANZA Doujin began with doujin-software sales in the late 1990s and expanded its section for live-action personal works in the 2010s. DLsite centres on games and doujin audio; Gcolle has functioned as a niche platform specialised in live-action personal works.

For monthly and continuing sales, myfans, OnlyFans, and Fantia are central, combining paid membership of recorded content with live streaming and fan DM contact for long-term revenue. The live-streaming strand branches off into tip-based erotic streaming, centred on real-time two-way payment.

Main production patterns

Couple shooting has lovers or married couples self-distributing their own POV; the sense of a “real couple,” hard to reproduce in commercial AV, drew a large buyer base on FANZA Doujin and Gcolle from the late 2010s. The amateur-cast type has the shooter find a woman through social media or nampa, shoot with consent, and sell; it compresses the commercial chain of scout, agency, and studio shoot, with the male shooter acting as director and seller. The influencer type builds on a social-media follower base, with the performer producing and selling, mainly through membership. The circle type has a circle with several female members or male performers producing continuing series like a doujin author, in a near-commercial division of labour but without scale or agency affiliation.

Difference in division of labour

Commercial AV divides performer, male performer, director, camera, lighting, sound, editing, package designer, promotion, and sales, with agency, studio, and distribution added on top, the final fee determined after deductions from studio to distribution. Personal sales abolishes nearly all of this: shooter and performer often the same (self-shooting), editing in-house, and the remainder after a 20 to 30 percent platform deduction going straight to the person. Transparency is high, but the person also absorbs every loss on an unprofitable work.

Reception

To the buyer, personal sales offers “a reality not found in commercial works.” Commercial AV is a finished construction of cut, lighting, sound effects, music, and mosaic, while personal works are rougher, often leaving ambient sound and skewed angles intact, and that roughness functions as material that strengthens the viewer’s emotional involvement. Pricing differs too: where commercial AV runs about 1,500 yen to stream, personal sales centres on a few hundred to about 2,000 yen, easy for light buyers to try and to bulk-buy once a favourite circle is found.

Fragility

Without an agency in between, the person bears trouble directly. Where shooter and performer are separate, there are reports of the shooter going silent and revenue-sharing stalling. Unauthorised public release and screenshot circulation also fall on the person to handle first. The AV Act imposed pre-shoot written contracts and a post-shoot cooling-off period on commercial AV, but its rules do not directly reach personal sales; platforms are introducing similar procedures by self-regulation, but institutional development lags behind the commercial sphere.
