A penis band (Japanese: ペニスバンド; English: cock ring, penis ring) is a ring worn at the base of the penis, or around the base of the penis and scrotum. Its main function is to partially restrict the return of venous blood, which supports the firmness and duration of an erection. It is one of the major categories of the sex-toy market, with products ranging from purely functional to those carrying an SM element.

Function

Use divides broadly into two purposes. The first is erection support: by moderately restricting venous outflow from the penis, the erection is less likely to soften, and the band is sometimes used to assist erections weakened by age, fatigue, or alcohol. For medical erectile dysfunction (ED) there are dedicated clinical devices, and a penis band is generally distinct from a medical device.

The second is sensory and psychological arousal. The constriction itself can act as an element of arousal, overlapping with the SM context of “bodily restraint and control.” Practitioners also describe the sense of being made to wear it by a partner, and the psychological effect of demonstrating physical commitment to a partner by wearing it.

Types and materials

By material: silicone (flexible, soft to the touch, easy to keep clean), metal (stainless steel, titanium, with fixed pressure and weight), leather (an SM texture with adjustable tightness), and rubber (highly elastic, easy to put on and remove). By function: simple ring types, vibrating types (with a built-in motor adding stimulation), double-ring types (passing the penis and scrotum separately), and multi-purpose types.

Safety notes

The most important point is managing wear time. Excessively long wear can worsen venous congestion, damage tissue, and in the worst case cause necrosis. Wearing for no longer than about thirty minutes is commonly recommended, and the band should be removed immediately if pain, discolouration, or coldness appears. Fixed-size items such as metal rings can be hard to remove, and cases of difficulty in an emergency are reported; beginners are advised to start with elastic materials or size-adjustable types.

Depiction in AV

In AV, some works stage a partner putting the band on, or carrying out the act with it worn. In the SM context it is used as a tool that stresses control of the submissive partner, as a state that “cannot be freely released.”
