Open the jacket and it reads “running time 480 minutes.” The eight hours are in fact a patchwork of highlights from a dozen titles, scenes you have seen before flowing one after another. Still it is not discarded, because there is a sure collector’s satisfaction in looking back over a favourite actress’s filmography on a single disc.

Overview

Soushuuhen (総集編) is the umbrella term for the compilation edition that re-edits famous and popular scenes from already-released AV titles into a single package. This article covers the editing structure, long-running specs such as the 4-hour and 8-hour, the role as a resale strategy in industry economics, and the position in fan consumption.

The compilation is a package product form particular to the AV industry, produced by re-editing existing material without new shooting. Editing units take several patterns: the per-actress compilation extracting famous scenes from a particular actress’s filmography; the per-series compilation gathering highlights from a long-running series; the per-genre compilation narrowed to a particular act or attribute (creampie, chijo, married woman); and the cross-label compilation a maker extracts from its own hit titles as an anniversary release, often planned at a 5th- or 10th-anniversary milestone.

“4 hours” (240 minutes) is the industry-standard shortest length, with “8 hours” (480 minutes) and “12 hours” (720 minutes), and rarely super-long runs, set as promotional centrepieces. The incentive to lengthen appeals directly to the consumer’s cost-performance (yen-per-minute) axis: where a single new title runs 60–120 minutes at roughly 3,000–6,000 yen, an 8-hour compilation is often released at the same price band or slightly above. In exchange, each scene’s excerpt tends to be shorter, with a digest composition of a few to a dozen minutes per scene; the main work’s context and character settings are cut, providing a “no-cut continuous playback” viewing experience of extracted act scenes.

Re-editing methods

Production ranges from simple copying of highlights from the main material to a processed type adding newly shot footage (fresh comment cuts from the current actress, making-of, unreleased scenes). In the latter case, the jacket carries promotional copy such as “X minutes of unreleased footage added,” functioning as a hook for repeat purchase.

The compilation is a typical resale strategy through secondary use of existing production. Without new shooting the production cost is held to a minimum, while the long-running spec lets the per-title unit price be set at or above a new release. From the streaming era, it also plays the role of “increasing the denominator” consumed within a subscription’s monthly fee. On FANZA and DLsite, the compilation is facet-searchable as a standalone category, with a regular layer narrowing by the “compilation” or “best” tag, a purchase line organised for the “rediscovery of past works.”

Career milestones of the exclusive actress

At exclusive-contract makers, releasing the actress’s compilation at milestones (just before contract expiry, just before renewal, at a transfer) has become customary, doubling as an “anniversary for fans” and a “summing-up of the contract period’s output.” From the AV debut work, a set period (typically 1 year, 2 years, or contract end) becomes the timing for a compilation, giving fans a chronological retrospective experience. Cases of a retirement-commemoration compilation alongside the AV retirement work, or a past-work compilation alongside the AV comeback work, also exist.

Change in the streaming era

In the streaming era, users can freely seek to the scene they want, so the compilation’s appeal as a package product has relatively declined against the DVD-package era. In response, recent compilations strengthen differentiation as collection products: “package only, not streaming,” “jacket and physical bonus included,” “collector binding.” On the streaming side, the compilation format itself is increasingly substituted by playlist functions such as “8 hours of an actress’s hits in continuous playback,” with platform algorithms’ auto-editing eroding the share of the edited compilation.

Position in fan consumption

When first trying an unknown actress’s work, the compilation functions as an entry product that “checks the highlights of several titles on one disc,” avoiding the uncertainty of drawing a winner from a single main title. For collection, physically assembling the milestone compilations of an actress followed over a long span is an established form of AV fandom, and the storage of physical packages is also an act of preserving a record of the post-retirement actress. For short-time viewing, the highlight composition of act scenes suits “watching one scene” or “background viewing while travelling” better than a story-type main title.

Comparison with related terms

The 4-hour package has an established standalone label as the compilation’s shortest spec, with a genre sense of “4 hours = entry/trial,” “8 hours = full collection.” It is a separate concept from the DVD-BOX (several titles boxed as-is), the compilation always denoting “a single title re-edited into one.” It resembles the Western “best of” and “greatest hits” forms, but differs in scale, the compilation functioning permanently as a standalone product genre alongside the regular new-release lineup in the AV industry.
