Open the search screen of an adult-video platform. Married woman, mature woman, big breasts, point-of-view, amateur, scripted. Hundreds of tags line the screen, each an independent selling category with its own dedicated makers, signature performers, and standard package photo. The Japanese adult-video industry developed this multi-axis classification scheme itself as a product infrastructure.

JAV genre classification is the system for sorting Japanese adult-video (AV) works. It runs as a multi-dimensional scheme in which several axes (performer attributes, setting, act type, narrative type, filming method) run in parallel, and it underpins both the industry’s distribution search and viewers’ taste navigation. This article covers the classification axes, the placement of major genres, the historical development, and operation on present-day search platforms.

Overview

JAV genre classification is not unified into a single system. The major platforms and makers each run their own tag schemes, with shared top-level categories and firm-specific subcategories running side by side. A single work standardly carries several tags, so that combinations of search terms support taste navigation. The industry term “genre” is itself ambiguous, denoting both the distribution tag and the production work-type; in the latter sense a performer’s main genre (mature-woman work, amateur work, chijo work) may appear in profiles.

Classification axes

JAV classification is built from the combination of several independent axes.

The performer-attribute axis sorts by body, age, occupation, and marital state, and is the most widely run, the core of distribution search. It covers age band (20s, 30s, 40s, mature woman); marital state (single, married woman, widow); occupation (office worker, schoolteacher, secretary, nurse, cabin attendant); body type (big breasts, huge breasts, small breasts, flat chest, slender, plump, petite); looks (bishoujo, beauty); and identity (amateur, ex-idol, ex-gravure).

The setting axis sorts by the space and time of the scene and serves situation works: school settings, workplace settings, home settings (stepmother, netori), outdoor settings, sex-industry settings, and public settings (train, bus, bar).

The act-type axis sorts by the concrete sexual act and is one of the core axes: standard acts (fellatio, cowgirl, missionary, doggy style); showy acts (creampie, bukkake, squirting); derived acts (face-sitting, anal, double penetration); bondage acts (kinbaku, SM); and dominant-woman acts (chijo, chikan).

The narrative-type axis sorts by story structure and is frequent in series and scripted works: domination (NTR), submission (training), chance encounter (pickup, dating-site), and fantasy (tentacle, monster, other-world).

The filming-method axis sorts by camerawork: point-of-view, subjective camera, hidden-camera style, VR, and the “magic mirror van.”

The legal axis, since the AV New Law, institutionally distinguishes by contract form and filming conditions: exclusive-performer versus single or scripted-performer works, post-law works versus earlier stock, and streaming-only versus packaged works.

Placement of major genres

Major genres sit at the intersections of these axes. “Married-woman NTR” is performer attribute plus narrative type; “amateur point-of-view” is performer attribute plus filming method; “school-setting chijo” is setting plus act type; “mature-woman creampie” is performer attribute plus act type. The combinations are countless, but the ones actually supplied as stable product genres are limited to those with market demand, numbering in the hundreds, each tied to specialist makers, signature performers, and standard packaging.

Historical development

From the founding period of AV in 1981, classification was built up in stages. The early scheme was coarse (amateur, scripted, exclusive-performer), with finer division into big-breast, married-woman, SM, and chijo work advancing from the late 1980s. The 1989 debut of Kimiko Matsuzaka under the director Toru Muranishi is recorded as a symbolic case of classification by body attribute, leading to the establishment of the big-breast genre.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, many labels specialised in particular genres, each contributing to the establishment of its field, while rental shops adopted the practice of marking genre tags on packages for search efficiency. In the 2010s, the rise of streaming platforms systematised classification as a search infrastructure, with platform tagging rules, maker self-tagging, and user tagging running in parallel. The 2022 AV New Law added a new institutional axis of contract form and filming conditions.

Comparison with overseas

The English-language adult-video industry runs its own classification, with notable contrasts: act-type classification is mainstream in the English-language market, while performer-attribute classification (married woman, office worker, mature woman) is mainstream in Japan; race and body-type categories form independent tags in the English-language market, while social attributes such as occupation and marital state carry greater weight in Japan. The differences reflect the cultural background and taste structure of each market.

Function as a classifying device

JAV classification is not merely a product catalogue but a device for taste navigation, self-identification, and communication: viewers verbalise their tastes in genre tags and share them with like-minded viewers, translating sexual preference into a socially shareable sign system. In the framework of sexual-discourse theory following Foucault’s History of Sexuality (1976), categorising sexual preference itself partly constitutes the preference, and JAV genre classification can be read as an empirical case of this framework.
