Overview

Double penetration (Japanese: ダブル挿入, daburu-sōnyū; English: double penetration / DP; also 2穴責め, ni-ana-zeme, “two-hole-attack”) refers to the sexual-act configuration in which two organs (typically two penises, or one penis and one toy) are simultaneously inserted into the receiving partner. The minimum participant-configuration is one woman and two men.

The configurations within the category are distinguished by which two of the three penetration-routes (vagina, anus, mouth) are simultaneously deployed:

• Vaginal + anal (the narrow-sense DP, the principal-and-most-common form)
• Vaginal + oral (combining vaginal insertion with oral irrumatio or deep-throat contact)
• Anal + oral (combining anal insertion with oral contact, sometimes with ATM / ass-to-mouth configuration)
• Double anal (double anal, DAP, two penises simultaneously in the anus, the most-extreme variant)

Triple-penetration (TP), in which all three routes are simultaneously used, requires the larger minimum-configuration of one woman and three men, and operates at the substantially-rare extreme of the category.

Distinction in vocabulary

The Japanese vocabulary uses three principal terms:

• Daburu-sōnyū (ダブル挿入, “double-insertion”): the descriptive-compound term, a hybrid katakana-loanword + sino-Japanese-noun construction.
• Ni-ana / 2-ana (二穴 / 2穴, “two-hole”): the direct-Japanese-anatomical term, with the hole (穴) referring to the body-orifices.
• DP: the imported English abbreviation, used in Japanese industry-vocabulary particularly from the 2000s onward as Western-content-influence expanded.

The English vocabulary uses DP as the standard industry-abbreviation, with the parallel expanded forms double penetration and double pen. The category is established as a named sub-genre across both Western and Japanese industries, with consistent abbreviation-recognition across the two markets.

The Japanese ni-ana and the English DP operate with parallel but slightly-different connotative loads. The Japanese ni-ana-zeme (two-hole-attack) includes the seme (responsible-attack) suffix from SM vocabulary, giving the Japanese term a slightly-more-SM-connotation than the more-neutral English DP. The English-vocabulary register is closer to industrial-category-name without the same SM-context implication.

Etymology

Daburu-sōnyū combines the English loanword double (ダブル, daburu) with the Sino-Japanese-noun sōnyū (挿入, “insertion”; see insertion). The compound thus represents a hybrid linguistic-construction characteristic of Japanese AV-industry vocabulary.

The English DP abbreviation stabilised in the U.S. adult-industry-trade-press from the late 1980s onward. Adult Video News (AVN, founded 1983) and similar industry publications established the abbreviation as the standard category-label. Subsequent abbreviation-extensions including TP (triple penetration), DAP (double anal penetration), and DVP (double vaginal penetration) followed in parallel as the sub-categorical articulation developed.

The Latin-source penetratio / penetrare (“to enter deeply”) underlies the English penetration, with the term operating in both medical-physiological and industry-vocabulary registers.

Historical development

Western adult-industry stabilisation

The thematisation of double-penetration as a distinct production-category traces to the 1970s “porno chic” period of Western adult-industry establishment. Deep Throat (1972), The Devil in Miss Jones (1973), and the broader contemporary commercial-pornography elaboration established the systematic-thematisation of extreme-content categories as a production-strategy. Linda Williams’s Hard Core (1989) frames this period under the concept frenzy of the visible — the production-driven push toward increasingly-explicit visual-content.

The 1980s home-video-market expansion supported the development of category-fragmentation in U.S. adult production, with DP emerging as one of the recognised independent sub-categories. The 1990s saw the establishment of dedicated DP-themed production lines, with Italian-American performers like Rocco Siffredi building careers around DP-themed productions. The Other Hollywood (McNeil and Osborne, 2005) provides oral-history documentation of this period.

By the 2000s, DP operated as essentially-standard production-vocabulary in Western adult industries, with the AVN Awards establishing dedicated category-recognition (Best Double Penetration Sex Scene and similar).

Japanese AV adaptation

Japanese AV-industry development of the ni-ana / daburu-sōnyū sub-genre proceeded later than the Western counterpart. Some anal-themed productions existed in 1980s Japanese AV, but the systematic-thematisation of the two-hole-configuration as a named sub-genre stabilised in the late 1990s through 2000s, with substantial-influence from imported Western productions.

In the 2000s, multiple major Japanese AV manufacturers established dedicated ni-ana / daburu-sōnyū production-lines, with the corresponding marketing-vocabulary (ni-ana-zeme, daburu-sōnyū, W-sōnyū) stabilising as standard category-labels. Fujiki TDC’s AV Sangyō 30-nenshi (2009) documents this period of category-development as a result of Japanese-AV-industry product-differentiation competition.

From the 2010s onward, doujinshi, eromanga, and eroge productions extended DP-themed content into the drawn-image sub-categories. The drawn-image production-context lifts the physical-load constraints of live-action production, allowing more-extreme variants to appear in drawn productions than in live-action.

Anatomical considerations

The DP configuration places substantial physical load on the receiving partner. Standard vaginal+anal DP produces direct mechanical-load on the rectovaginal septum — the connective-tissue layer (several millimetres thick) separating rectum and vagina. Excessive mechanical-loading can produce mucosal-tissue damage and, in extreme cases, rectovaginal-fistula formation.

The anal sphincter (sphincter ani) has a two-layer structure: an outer voluntary muscle and an inner involuntary muscle. Both contract reflexively when tensed, and rapid uncontrolled expansion can produce mucosal-tearing and sphincter-damage. Jack Morin’s Anal Pleasure and Health (1981) provides the foundational treatment of graduated-anal-practice required before more-extreme configurations.

DAP (double anal) operates at the upper-extreme of the anatomical-load range, with the configuration generally restricted in industry practice to performers with extensive graduated-practice experience.

Industry production practice in both Western and Japanese contexts has developed safety-protocols for DP-related productions: explicit lubrication-use, rest-periods between scenes, performer-health-screening, and STI testing-protocols. The PASS (Performer Availability Screening Services) system in the U.S. adult industry provides systematic STI screening for performers in extreme-content productions; comparable Japanese-industry self-regulation operates through industry organisations.

Sub-categories

Standard DP (vaginal + anal)

The principal configuration. Two male performers simultaneously, one penetrating the vagina and the other the anus. Various position-configurations (sitting, supine, standing) accommodate the geometry, with camera-work designed for simultaneous-visibility of both penetration-points.

Double vaginal (DV / DVP)

Two penises simultaneously in the vagina. Rare in Japanese industry production, more-developed in Western productions with established abbreviation usage (DV, DVP).

Double anal (DAP)

Two penises simultaneously in the anus. The most-extreme anatomical-load configuration, restricted to experienced performers.

Triple penetration (TP)

Three simultaneous penetrations using all three routes. Minimum configuration of one woman and three men. Position-geometry is substantially-constrained by the simultaneous-three-route requirement.

Toy-assisted configurations

One penis and one toy (vibrator, dildo; see adult toys). The toy-assisted configuration reduces the personnel-cost and allows lower-budget productions to achieve the visual configuration without the multi-performer overhead.

Cultural and ethical context

In gender-and-sexuality studies, DP representations are discussed as a multiple-other-occupation-of-the-body thematic device. The configuration breaks the conventional one-on-one structure of sexual representation, reconstructing the body as a multiple-route-target object. Linda Williams and subsequent porn-studies scholarship analyse this configuration as the visual-rhetorical-extreme of the frenzy of the visible tendency in the modern adult-content tradition.

Productions combining DP with the cuckolding (netorare) sub-genre operate the configuration as a possession-by-others thematic intensifier, with the resulting narrative-frame producing substantial emotional-and-relational weight beyond pure visual-extremity.

Public-health perspectives address the elevated STI-transmission risks, the performer-physical-load concerns, and the on-set hygiene-protocols. The WHO, U.S. CDC, and similar bodies provide guidance on anal-route sexual-contact safety that applies with particular weight to multi-route configurations.

Regulatory context

Multi-performer extreme-content productions raise specific consent-protocol and performer-protection concerns. In Japan, the 2022 AV Industry Performer Damage Prevention and Relief Act requires written contracts, pre-production explanation of content, and a contract-cancellation grace-period. Multi-route configurations and extreme-content productions specifically require itemised-consent-acquisition in contracts.

After AV-Shinpō implementation, contract-practice in Japanese AV has stabilised on explicit-itemised-listing of intended scene-elements, with performers retaining the right to refuse on-set actions outside the contracted scope, and the contract-cancellation right operating for one year post-shooting.

The 2023 Japanese Penal Code revision establishing the non-consent-based sexual-offence (fudōi-seikō-zai) framework provides additional consent-quality requirements: the substantive-quality of consent acquisition is now a factor in criminal-law analysis, with consequent influence on industry consent-acquisition practice.

International regulatory variation is substantial. France, Germany, and similar European jurisdictions maintain commercial-pornography production legality while developing performer-protection-and-consent legislation. The U.S. federal 18 U.S.C. § 2257 statute mandates performer age-and-identity records. Iceland, South Korea, and other jurisdictions maintain stricter restrictions on the broader category. Regulatory-strength variation shapes the international content-distribution structure substantially.
