Nyoudou-zeme (Urethral Play / Sounding)
✎ 本文編集 (admin) 🖼 画像編集 (admin)Not the surface of the genitals but their interior: a channel never meant to receive anything has a thin instrument passed into it. As a specialised BDSM practice held at the border of pain and pleasure, it exists only on the premise of medical knowledge and sanitation. This is urethral play. Nyoudou-zeme (Japanese: 尿道責め, “urethral torment”; English: urethral play, sounding) is the general term for inserting a thin instrument into the male or female urethra, or stimulating it externally. This article covers the practice, the medical risks, its place in the BDSM context, its relation to medical sounding instruments, and its depiction in adult media.
Overview
Urethral play uses dedicated medical sounds (smooth metal rods), urethra-specific vibrators made by sex-toy manufacturers, or thin silicone rods, inserted into the urethra. In men the penile urethra runs about 15-25 cm; in women the urethra is about 3-5 cm.
The appeal centres on physical stimulation of a deep region unreachable by ordinary genital contact, a sensation described as “internal expansion,” and the erotic re-reading of a sensation adjacent to urination. In the BDSM community it is positioned as an advanced practice premised on specialist knowledge, sanitation, and gradual dilation.
Medical risks
The urethral mucosa is thin and easily bleeds or tears under an inappropriate instrument or force. Specific risks include abrasion and laceration of the urethral mucosa; urinary-tract infection from introduced bacteria (urethritis, cystitis, pyelonephritis); breakage or loss of the instrument requiring emergency care; chronic urethral stricture; and, in men, injury to tissue around the prostate.
In clinical settings, urethral catheter insertion is a procedure performed by trained personnel under aseptic technique. To perform comparable insertion as home BDSM play presumes sterilised medical-grade instruments, appropriate lubrication (sterile medical lubricant), gradual increase in diameter, and immediate cessation on any abnormality. This article does not provide a how-to; it records the practice and its hazards.
Place in the BDSM context
Within the BDSM community, urethral play is classed as edge play (high-risk, for experienced practitioners), a field where dedicated instrument reviews and practice guides are shared, and one a beginner typically approaches only after staged instruction from an experienced dominant. In English it is called sounding, borrowed from the medical instrument name, and practice information circulates in specialist communities. In Japan it is discussed under the names nyoudou-zeme and nyoudou play in adult media, specialist magazines, and SM clubs.
Depiction in AV and adult manga
A certain volume of AV and adult manga depicts urethral play. Male-targeted penile sounding is used as a strong symbol of sadistic torment within “male-M” and chijo (dominant-woman) works. Female urethral play is rarer, appearing in training-themed and BDSM works.
The gap between depiction and reality is wide: works do not show the risk of bleeding or infection, ignore sanitation, and stage prolonged play as if directly pleasurable, fictional embellishments typical of the genre. Actual safe practice presumes medical knowledge and a sterile environment.
