Vampire erotica is the umbrella term for adult creation taking vampire, blood-kin, and Castlevania-style characters as subject and layering the bite and the exchange of blood with sexual contact.

Overview

Vampire erotica is a sub-genre of the fantasy genre especially deeply bound to sexuality. Setting fangs to the neck functions as a metaphor for the sexual act in that the body is penetrated, and the exchange of blood is analogised to the exchange of semen and fluids. The vampire’s three attributes, eternal life, belonging to the dark, and deviation from human society, all function as a transcendent extension of desire. The chief carriers are eroge, eromanga, and doujin audio, with two structures running in parallel: a female vampire preying on a male protagonist, and a male vampire subjugating a female protagonist. The former connects deeply to the chijo-style aggressive-woman line and reverse-rape; the latter to domination and the fantasy genre.

Etymology and Western tradition

Vampire tradition arose in the folk belief of eighteenth-century Eastern Europe, and the modern vampire image was established through John Polidori’s The Vampyre (1819), Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872), and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). Le Fanu’s Carmilla, in particular, is a story of a female vampire possessing a female protagonist, read since the late nineteenth century as a text already containing metaphors of same-sex desire, domination, and sexual deviation. The erotic vampire image passed through the 1922 film Nosferatu and was established in the 1970s Hammer Film Productions Carmilla series, which combined the depiction of the female body with sexual horror.

The vampire is often depicted as beautiful, intelligent, and a being of the night, possessing a beauty from which one cannot flee at close range. The affinity with the succubus is high, the female vampire functioning as a predator drawing the male protagonist’s essence and the male vampire as a being subjugating the female protagonist’s body.

Derivative works

In eroge, vampire settings have been adopted for main characters in works such as those of the Propeller and Liar-soft lines. In eromanga, several artists have published work with vampire heroines, distributed at doujin conventions in parallel with succubus and demon-character work. In doujin audio, situations such as “dominated by a vampire lady” and “becoming the kin of vampire sisters” have become standard, holding stable demand as a sub-genre of situation voice.
