Tachi-back (Standing Rear-Entry)
✎ 本文編集 (admin) 🖼 画像編集 (admin)The body crumples against the entryway wall, the coat not even fully off. When this position is chosen in a story, it usually carries the narrative of “couldn’t wait.” Tachi-back (Japanese: 立ちバック, “standing back”) is a position in which the receiving partner takes a forward-leaning standing posture and the inserting partner stands behind to enter from the rear. It is a standing variant of the rear-entry family: the receiving partner braces both hands on a wall, bed, or table in a forward lean, and the inserting partner stands behind to couple. A frequent position in AV and adult manga, it is staged with the “before reaching the bed” situations of bathroom, entryway, toilet, and kitchen.
Overview
In tachi-back both partners stand, the inserting partner positioned at the receiving partner’s rear. The receiving partner leans forward, bracing the upper body on a wall, table, or bed-edge; the inserting partner supports the receiving partner’s hips with both hands and drives the coupling through forward-back pelvic motion. Kinematically it is a standing variant of rear-entry: with neither supine nor prone, both weights are supported on the legs. The inserting partner’s pelvic motion leads and the receiving partner’s initiative is limited. Depth is set by the combination of height difference, pelvic angle, and degree of forward lean, and feasibility depends on the partners’ build balance.
Where ekiben fully lifts the receiving partner, tachi-back keeps the receiving partner’s legs on the floor, distributing the load differently. The inserting partner’s upper limbs serve to hold the receiving partner’s hips, chest, or breasts, functioning as the fulcrum of the pelvic motion.
Etymology
Tachi-back compounds the Japanese tachi (“standing”) with the English-derived back (short for rear-entry). It formed as AV-industry vocabulary in the 1980s-90s and became established as sex-manual, AV-genre, and dōjinshi vocabulary. The academic term is “standing rear-entry position,” but “tachi-back” overwhelmingly circulates among AV and adult-manga audiences. English uses standing rear-entry and standing doggy. The Sanskrit Kāmasūtra does not explicitly describe standing rear-entry. The Edo Forty-Eight Hands lists several standing positions prefixed “standing-” (standing matsuba, standing chausu, standing honte), but a proper name clearly equivalent to standing rear-entry is hard to identify.
History
Standing rear-entry appears as figural representation in the ancient Mediterranean and India; the composition is seen in Pompeii wall paintings and on ancient Greek pottery. The Kāmasūtra describes a rear-entry variant in which the receiving partner takes an “animal posture” (dhenuka, the cow position), but standing execution is not specified. In Edo shunga, compositions resembling standing rear-entry are frequent: coupling scenes in market spaces such as bathhouses, barbershops, and teahouses are drawn in standing compositions. Edo erotic books record several standing positions prefixed “standing-,” but a proper name uniquely identifiable as the direct ancestor of tachi-back is scarce.
The establishment of tachi-back in AV relates to the circulation of industry vocabulary based on the on-site staging of soaplands and fashion health shops from the 1980s. AV how-to manuals (such as Mami Amamiya’s The AV Textbook) place tachi-back as a “position used for scene transitions” and “a position that expresses narrative immediacy.” In 1990s-2000s AV staging-grammar, tachi-back became a fixed composition tied to situations like “in the entryway, unable to wait,” “in the shower,” and “in the kitchen.” In adult manga and dōjinshi too, it established as the standard composition expressing “coupling somewhere other than the bed,” chosen for classroom, hallway, office, public toilet, and street settings emphasising the immediacy and chance of the situation.
Variants
Wall-press tachi-back: the receiving partner braces both hands on a wall, the inserting partner standing behind, the most standard variant, a frequent composition in AV and adult manga.
Bathroom tachi-back: using the bathroom wall, tub edge, or washing-area tiles as support, a fixed position in soapland-themed and bathroom-staged AV.
Deep-forward-lean tachi-back: the receiving partner deepens the forward lean, bracing on the ankles or floor, increasing depth and the visibility of the junction, with high affinity for junction shooting.
Boundary with lying rear-entry: when the receiving partner deepens the lean and places the upper body on a bed or table, it sits at the boundary with lying rear-entry, distinguished by whether the legs remain on the floor.
Boundary with ekiben: when the receiving partner is lifted from behind and the legs leave the floor entirely, it is classed in the ekiben family; tachi-back keeps the legs on the floor.
Reception and expression
Tachi-back functions in AV and adult manga as a sign of immediacy, chance, and out-of-place. As the standard composition visualising narratives like “it started before reaching the bed,” “couldn’t hold back in the entryway,” and “ambushed in the shower,” it occupies the core of situation staging. As a rear-entry form, tachi-back has a structure with no crossing gaze, and the absence of gaze is used in staging as a sign that stresses psychological distance. In netorare works, the scene of “the wife coupling with another man in standing rear-entry” is used as an iconic composition that stresses “mechanical sexual relations” even more than face-to-face positions.
In adult manga and dōjinshi, the tachi-back composition suits the vertical page format: with both bodies arranged along the vertical axis, panel layout gains freedom and it adapts well to multi-character group compositions. In school, workplace, and public-space situation erotica, tachi-back frequently takes the leading role. In store-based sex-industry staging-grammar it is a standard element placed at “post-shower coupling,” “transition to mat play,” and “the final feature position.”
