The AV production set refers to the filming space arranged to make adult video content and to the whole work of the crew and performers there. It carries equipment and crew structures similar to general film and video production, but it operates under the distinctive professional ethics, safety management, and legal requirements specific to adult content.

Set composition

The production crew typically includes a director, camera operator, lighting and sound staff, hair and makeup, a stills photographer (for promotional images), and a manager. Large producers have advanced division of labour, while small and independent operations often use a “one-person shoot” style in which the director also handles the camera.

Performers include the actress (and the male performer), and depending on the project, extras and staff performers. Performers usually work through an agency or as freelancers, and each shoot is carried out under an individual contract.

Filming locations vary with purpose: dedicated studios fitted out to resemble love hotels or ordinary residences, rented properties, hotels, and outdoor locations. Well-equipped studios and the use of ordinary properties for a sense of realism coexist.

The shooting flow

A typical AV shoot begins with a pre-shoot meeting (confirming content and prohibited acts with the performer), followed by preparation and makeup on the day, the main shoot (cut breakdown and multi-angle filming scene by scene), and post-shoot confirmation.

A single title is filmed over several hours to a full day, then passes through editing, mosaic processing, and package design before sale. The production flow differs between project-based AV and content-supply models.

Changes after the AV Law

The 2022 Act on Prevention of Damages from Appearing in Adult Videos (the AV Law) forced major operational change on AV sets. Key provisions include a written-contract requirement, a waiting period of at least one month between signing and shooting, an interval of at least four months between shooting and release, a withdrawal right within one year, and an identity-verification duty for operators.

These changes aim to protect performers and required producers to overhaul shooting schedules, contract forms, and post-shoot rights management. After the law took effect, the closure of small producers unable to meet the conditions and a fall in production volume were reported, while some observers also credited the law with raising the industry’s overall standard of performer protection.

The male performer’s role and selection

On set, the male performer as scene partner is held to require specialized technique, stamina, and psychological stability. Both exclusive and freelance male performers exist, and some actresses and directors prioritize “compatibility” and trust with a particular partner. Selection can be influenced by the actress’s agency and the production company.

In recent years, projects using amateur male performers, and projects that deliberately cast unknown “unattractive” male performers, hold a degree of demand, so that the male performer’s role goes beyond a simple scene partner to carry a directorial intent.
