Nanpa-mono (ナンパもの, “pickup genre”) is the Japanese AV genre built on the act of nanpa, calling out to women passers-by on the street, at entertainment districts, or at event venues, and developing from there into a sexual scene. Bracketed broadly with the “amateur” line, its greatest feature is the staging of reality and contingency through performers presented as ordinary people.

Overview

The core appeal of nanpa-mono is the viewer’s illusion that “this might really be an ordinary person”. The acting skill that makes a cast actress look thoroughly like an ordinary person, the documentary-style handheld camera technique, and the use of real footage with street noise and passers-by bleeding into frame are the principal means of staging the amateur feel. The paradox of “the amateur feel as fiction” is the fundamental structure the whole genre carries. The viewer, while understanding its fictionality, enjoys the possibility that “this might be a real amateur”, in a half-conscious, self-deceiving mode of reception.

History and change

The nanpa-style staging of Japanese AV has its germ in the “matchmaking” and “amateur-submission” AV of the 1980s. The early mainstream recruited and cast ordinary people by mail or telephone, but in the 1990s works foregrounding street casting appeared and gave the genre its outline. From the late 1990s into the early 2000s, planning AV using special vehicles, above all the Magic Mirror Car, became a major hit, and planning AV embedding a nanpa-style “device” was mass-produced. The Magic Mirror Car established an independent brand as a derivative of nanpa-mono and became a long-running series continuing to the present. After the spread of digital distribution, low-cost production became possible and small and mid-sized labels increased their output; at the same time, competition with amateur footage on video-sharing sites arose, and the technical refinement of “the amateur feel made by professionals” came to be demanded all the more.

Tendencies

Nanpa-mono divides into several sub-genres by shooting style. The “street-pickup type” places approach scenes in entertainment districts, station forecourts, or around commercial facilities at the opening, then moves to a hotel; the “hotel pickup type” and “tourist-location type” incorporate specific places into the setup. Standard staging elements include “pretext” openings disguised as asking directions or inviting a meal, a setup of several staff surrounding the subject, the “actually it’s such-and-such” reveal of identity, and the confession “I’m nervous since it’s my first time”. As performer attributes, “everyday-adjacent” identities such as a female student, an office worker, a housewife, a tourist, or someone newly arrived from the provinces are often used as setup, which secures the plausibility of the “chance encounter”.

One problem nanpa-mono carries arises when the claim of amateur status diverges from the performer’s reality. Selling pre-cast actresses misrepresented as amateurs is a false representation to consumers, and there have been cases where labelling regulation and refund handling became an issue. Since the 2022 AV Law came into force, written performer contracts and a cooling-off period have been required, and the staging of “picked up and immediately appearing” has come to be clearly positioned as fiction. Actual shooting requires advance consent confirmation and statutory procedure, and the setup of a “contingent street appearance” is handled as pure fictional staging.
