Piercing Fetish
✎ 本文編集 (admin) 🖼 画像編集 (admin)Not the earlobe, but the place beyond it. The small metal piercing a nipple, the ring glinting at the edge of the genitals. Some feel desire at a hole opened in the skin and the cold gleam of the metal threaded through it. It is at once decoration, a mark of pain, and a sign of resolve. A piercing fetish (ピアスフェチ) is the taste for such signs carved into the body.
A piercing fetish is the arousal at piercings worn on the body, especially body piercings such as nipple and genital piercings. Tied deeply to body-modification culture, it is a domain where several meanings intersect: visual decoration, the pain accompanying the procedure, and the sign of ownership or belonging.
Overview
The object of a piercing fetish extends beyond the ear to piercings across the body. The focus in sexual contexts is especially the nipple piercing (nipple) hidden under clothing, and the body piercing around the genitals. Metal pierced in a place invisible in daily life functions as a secret of the partner’s body, and to see it is itself a trigger of arousal. The structure of the appeal is not single: the visual decorativeness of metal against lace or skin, the pain and resolve accompanying the act of piercing or being pierced, and the implication of ownership and belonging in “carrying a sign invisible to others on the body” each work as an independent or overlapping appeal.
A cultural history of body decoration
The custom of opening holes in the body for decoration exists in many of the world’s cultures from antiquity. Adornment of the ears, nose, and lips has carried various social meanings: rites of passage, the display of status, magical protection. Modern body-piercing culture became widely visible in the West in the latter twentieth century. The subcultural movement symbolised by the 1989 photo book Modern Primitives, citing non-Western body decoration, redefined piercing, tattoo, and scarification as means of self-expression and body modification. In Japan, fashion body piercing permeated youth culture from the 1990s, bonding with street fashion, visual-kei, and club culture, and adornment of parts other than the ear gradually generalised. The nipple and genital piercings that carry sexual meaning are positioned, even within this body-modification culture, as decoration belonging to a more private, intimate domain.
Position as a fetish object
The piercing fetish is organised, alongside the tattoo fetish, as a body-decoration taste. Both direct desire not at “the skin itself” but at “a deliberate alteration added to the skin”. Where a tattoo is a planar image, a piercing is a three-dimensional metal penetrating the skin, evoking images of pain and penetration more directly. From the standpoint of sexual pleasure, the nipple and genital piercings are also spoken of as a continuous source of stimulation to erogenous zones; the binding of visual decorative appeal with a physical effect on sensation is one feature of this taste.
In the context of SM culture, the act of piercing itself is sometimes built in as a staging of pain and dominance and submission. The irreversibility of opening a permanent hole in the body is given meaning as a proof of the relationship or a mark of ownership; temporary needle play (play piercing) is also practised as a practice thematising pain and bodily intrusion. All of these should presuppose safety, hygiene, and consent, and the exaggerated depictions of fiction are to be distinguished from real practice.
