Eating-Sound Fetish (Shokuji-Oto Fetish)
✎ 本文編集 (admin) 🖼 画像編集 (admin)You push the earbuds in and play the video, and all that comes through is the sound of someone, very close, chewing something. The faint impact of teeth meeting teeth, a viscous sound mixed with saliva, the movement of the throat on swallowing, the small burst as lips touch. Even with no image, the world inside the mouth unfolds at your ear. Eating-sound fetish is the umbrella term for strong sexual or aesthetic attraction to the chewing, swallowing, and various physiological sounds the mouth produces while a person eats.
Object and range
The sounds it targets are many: the crunch of biting something hard, the suction of slurping fruit or noodles, the viscous sound of saliva mixing with food, the gurgle of swallowing, the sound of licking the lips afterward, breaths and small interjections between bites, and the up-and-down movement of the throat swallowing a drink.
In the Anglophone world, “eating sounds” is an established genre of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) content, with vast numbers of dedicated channels and sites. The Korean-origin mukbang spread as an eating-broadcast culture, and as a derivative, recordings focused on eating sounds alone branched off and spread worldwide.
Reception mechanism
Several psychological factors underlie the sound as an object of attraction. First, the mouth is an organ whose “inside” is involved, and its internal sounds belong to a private domain not usually heard by others; the arrangement of being made to hear them directly at the ear works as a strong signal of intimacy. Second, chewing sounds couple with autonomic bodily activity (breathing, swallowing, tongue movement) that the person cannot fully control. Even eating consciously, the sounds made unconsciously cannot be stopped, and this “uncontrollable rawness” is received as a leak of the interior, akin to blushing or breath sounds. Third, hearing can evoke a sensation close to touch: the brain reconstructs the moisture, temperature, viscosity, and tongue movement of the mouth from sound alone, and this experience of “evoking touch from sound” is thought to be the core of ASMR pleasure.
Relation to ASMR and audio content
Eating-sound fetish is consumed as a major genre of ASMR culture in both sexual and non-sexual contexts. On general ASMR channels, non-sexual chewing-sound videos aimed at relaxation, sleep induction, and concentration are the mainstream, with biting pickles, fried chicken, and honeycomb as standard material. In adult audio works, eating sounds function less as a standalone genre than as material embedded in situation voice: in co-habiting, sleeping-together, or eating-together scenarios, spending intimate time while hearing the partner’s eating sounds at the ear. Works are produced that combine ear-licking, mouth sounds, and voice to offer a total acoustic experience of the mouth.
The flip side: misophonia
Reaction to eating sounds swings to the complete opposite for some people. Alongside those who love them, a portion of people feel strong discomfort or anger at chewing and swallowing sounds, known medically as misophonia (sound-aversion). Complaints of being unable to bear a family member’s eating sounds or to concentrate over a colleague’s chewing were conceptualised from the 2000s and are studied in medicine and psychology. That the same sound stimulus produces exquisite pleasure in one group and strong aversion in another is of note to fetish research: it shows that the individual’s interpretation and neural processing, not the sound itself, splits taste from aversion.
Adjacent tastes
Eating-sound fetish is often bundled with ear fetish, ASMR appreciation, oral fetish, and voice fetish. Within the frame of “all sounds arising from the mouth,” it connects continuously with lip sounds, tongue-clicking, kissing sounds, breath sounds, and stifled laughter. Rather than treated alone, it comes into focus more clearly within the broad frame of the acoustic pull of the mouth and its surroundings.
