Cuddle Audio (Soine Voice)
✎ 本文編集 (admin) 🖼 画像編集 (admin)Through the earphones, a rustle of cloth approaches from your right shoulder toward your ear. A small “are you asleep already?” is followed by “you have an early start, so close your eyes.” The sound of a body sinking onto the bedding, the beat of breath settling, a faint breath against the nape. Despite the absence of any visual information, the listener clearly perceives the bodily arrangement of someone lying beside them. Cuddle audio reproduces the intimacy itself of “being in the same bed” through audio alone, without passing through depiction of the sexual act.
Overview
Soine voice (添い寝ボイス; English: cuddle audio) is a strand of doujin audio and erotic ASMR in which a performer lying beside the listener at bedtime stages physical closeness through whispers, sleeping breath, heartbeat, and kiss sounds along with speech. The breath, cloth rustle, and bedding sounds, captured left-right independently by binaural recording, produce a pseudo-intimacy as if the performer were a few centimetres from the listener’s ear. A long-form construction of 60 minutes to 3 hours is common, designed on the premise of falling-asleep viewing.
The core has three layers: the asymmetry of breath reaching the left and right ears as the performer lies beside, the positional information from the sinking of the bedding and cloth rustle, and the speech and sound effects of gentle physical contact not including genital contact (head-stroking, drawing close, holding hands). Binaural recording delivers these three layers directly to the listener’s eardrum position, reconstructing a bedtime environment without vision. The centre of the experience is not the act itself but the continuous presentation of the spatial arrangement of “another person in the same bed.” Where ear-cleaning, whispering, and heartbeat thematise a per-instance stimulus, cuddle audio thematises a long, stimulus-free co-presence, which enables its connection to sleep-induction and loneliness-relief demand. On DLsite Maniacs and FANZA doujin audio, “soine” is organised as a standalone tag and constantly reaches the top of the monthly ranking.
Etymology
“Soine” is a native word from the classical language meaning to sleep nestled against someone, especially a parent lying beside an infant to put it to sleep. Embedded in everyday language as a basic gesture of family life since the early modern period, it is a neutral word not necessarily carrying sexual connotation. The labels “cuddle voice” and “soine audio” took hold around 2015 in the tags and titles of doujin-audio platforms, derived from earlier ear-whisper and ear-licking audio by thematising bodily arrangement and long duration. In English, similar genres run under cuddle audio and pillow-talk audio.
History
Soine is deeply embedded in Japanese society as a gesture of childcare, nursing, and married life since the early modern period. The scenes of a mother putting an infant to sleep, a couple sleeping side by side, or a carer lying beside a patient are familiar standard expressions repeated in manga, drama, and fiction, a cultural base that prepared the reception of “wholesome-leaning” cuddle audio separated from sexual staging. The spread of binaural recording made it possible to thematise close breath, cloth rustle, and bedding sounds, formerly secondary acoustic elements. In the same period, sleep audio and boyfriend roleplay content developed on English-language YouTube, and Japanese doujin-audio creators applying this to an adult context is the effective starting point of cuddle audio.
Around 2016, a “soine” tag was organised on DLsite’s doujin-audio category. Specialist circles unfolded in parallel by character type (girlfriend, younger sister, childhood friend, senior, married woman), each acquiring its own fixed subscriber base. Against the increased time at home and changed life rhythms from 2020, demand for long-form falling-asleep audio expanded rapidly, and cuddle audio became the core of the “girlfriend-situation cuddle” format with sexual staging held to a minimum, connecting with girlfriend- and boyfriend-roleplay audio.
Recording technique
In cuddle audio, the distance, angle, and breath flow between the performer and the dummy head are finely controlled. In a composition lying to the listener’s right, breath localises toward the right ear; on the left, the reverse. As the performer turns over or leans in from above, the localisation shifts. The presentation of space without vision rests on the precision of this localisation control. The rustle of futon, sheets, pillow, pyjamas, and nightwear forms the base layer of spatial information; the sound effects recorded differ by fabric texture, and fleece versus silk markedly changes the timbre at the ear, so many specialist circles prepare several kinds of bedding and clothing. Cuddle audio is generally a 60–180-minute long-form construction premised on the listener falling asleep midway: after establishing the situation in the first 5–15 minutes, it sustains through a cycle of whisper, breath, bedding sound, and effects, with editing that keeps the volume balance continuously flat and avoids sudden changes.
Derived forms and adjacent concepts
Cuddle audio divides broadly into a wholesome-leaning type that completes by sleep without depiction of genital contact, which occupies the core of falling-asleep demand, and a sexual-development type that places sex, kiss, and caress scenes in a later section, inheriting the traditional format of erotic ASMR; the boundary is fluid. The attacking role in voice acting divides into the equal type (girlfriend, childhood friend), the maternal type (older sister, married woman, mature woman), the younger type (younger sister, junior), the caretaking type (nurse), and the non-human type. Cuddle audio is often composed in combination with ear-cleaning and heartbeat voice; the order “lap-pillow ear-cleaning → cuddle → whisper → heartbeat → sleeping breath” is established as a template for sleep induction.
Cultural reception
The social function of cuddle audio lies in providing “a bedtime environment with another person beside you” to listeners who have no actual cohabiting or romantic relationship. As a supplementary device easing the absence of a cohabitant, loneliness, and bedtime anxiety, it has come to occupy a quasi-infrastructural position beyond mere sexual entertainment, in parallel with the expansion of voice-actor roleplay subscription and streaming culture. In English, cuddle audio, boyfriend ASMR, and girlfriend ASMR developed non-commercially on YouTube and Reddit’s r/GoneWildAudio, with partial commercialisation through paid audio-porn apps.
