The unbuttoned cuff is folded twice up to just below the elbow. The contour of the arm that had run downward enters the field of vision all at once: the veins on the forearm, the bony wrist, the faint shadow of tendons. From a state where the shirt fully covered the body, to a state where twenty percent of both arms is released. This much motion alone rewrites the impression of a person. The rolled-sleeves fetish (腕まくりフェチ, udemakuri-fechi) is the strong aesthetic or sexual appeal felt toward the act of rolling up one’s sleeves, or toward the rolled-sleeve arm itself.

Two layers: gesture and result

The fetish has two directions. One is the kink for the gesture itself: unbuttoning, lifting the cloth, folding twice, fixing it just below the elbow. The flow of finger movement, gaze, weight shift, and the final little adjusting of the sleeve, a roughly five-to-ten-second action sequence, is the object of appreciation. The other is the kink for the result: the bared forearm itself, the skin nearer the upper arm, the rise of veins, the shadow of tendons, the joint of the elbow, the contrast with the shirt’s fold. Real enthusiasts usually appreciate both, but the centre of gravity, “motion” or “state,” divides the quality of the kink.

The male rolled sleeve

The fetish works especially strongly in the context of male formal or semi-formal dress: the dress shirt, suit, white coat, or work clothes. Taking off the jacket, loosening the tie slightly, rolling up the shirt sleeve, this is a gesture that visualises the shift from “the order of formal wear” to “the functionality of a working man,” giving the observer an impression of professional focus, maturity, and competence. A doctor rolling up the sleeve of a white coat, a cook rolling up the chef’s coat, an engineer rolling up the work shirt: across these scenes the gesture functions as a sign of “the man absorbed in his work,” evoking professional ability and sexual appeal at once. The rolled sleeve is consumed as a moe attribute of the handsome character through this compound effect.

The female rolled sleeve

The female rolled sleeve has its own context: rolling up before housework, before cooking, before heading to work. The gesture of focus, “about to take something on,” reads as attractive regardless of gender. A woman in dress coded as masculine, the white coat, suit, or dress shirt, rolling up her sleeves carries a distinct force as a crossing of gender signs. In designs of the working woman, the female doctor, the prosecutor, the researcher, the rolled sleeve is frequently drawn as a gesture reinforcing the intelligent, capable, cool attributes.

The forearm as a part

At the root of the kink lies the appeal of the forearm itself (elbow to wrist), a part where bone, tendon, and vein run densely just beneath the skin, so that fine changes appear on the surface with each movement. Gripping, extending the fingers, applying grip strength, turning the wrist, the forearm muscles move in real time and the subcutaneous veins rise and fall. The “vein fetish,” a finely subdivided kink for the state of raised forearm veins, forms a layer deeply overlapping the rolled-sleeves fetish, and these objects of observation are presented to view by the act of rolling.

In fiction and live action

In shoujo manga, BL, and otome-game male-character design, the rolled-sleeve figure is an established standard pose emphasising appeal, a visual sign of “a state slightly loosened from formal daily life.” In live-action adult media, the rolled-sleeve figure of a male performer is sometimes consciously staged as an appealing scene in works for women, a standard compositional option for emphasising male attractiveness. Conversely, on the female side, the scene of rolling up housework or work clothes is used in clothed-erotic works as staging that lets domesticity and allure coexist.
