A forest track just off the paved road, a deserted park at night, a beach at low tide. In spaces where everyday scenery overlaps with sexual activity, openness and the unease of discovery run together. A genre that markets the outdoor setting itself as commercial value has been maintained continuously since the dawn of AV.

Yagai-mono, the outdoor genre, is the umbrella term for erotic works that stage sexual activity in open-air space. Set in forests, parks, streets, beaches, campsites and riverbanks, it uses the coexistence of openness and the tension of being seen as a narrative device, established across AV, adult manga and doujinshi. This entry treats the outdoor genre as a fictional work category, separate from outdoor as fetish concept and practice.

Overview

The basic structure of the outdoor genre rests on the choice of open-air space itself. Unlike interiors, staging sexual activity in a space where external factors intervene (the passage of third parties, weather, the natural environment) makes openness and the tension of discovery function together as a narrative device. As a shooting site the outdoors involves difficulties of equipment transport, weather management and permits, so it is also a higher-cost area than interior shooting.

Standard settings include forests and tracks (quiet natural space allowing long-form development), parks (urban public space with high discovery tension), coasts and beaches (maximizing openness, an affinity with swimwear and fluids), campsites and tents (an enclosed outdoor middle ground), riverbanks and under bridges (the gaps of the city), rooftops (open air within the city) and streets and residential areas (high-risk space connected to exhibitionism). These are not strictly exclusive, and a single work often combines several scenes. In commercial distribution, FANZA and DMM set “outdoor” as an independent search category, and the AV industry classifies it under terms such as “outdoor” and “open-air sex,” maintaining a stable supply as a long-running category.

Etymology

“Yagai-mono” is a Japanese compound noun for works themed on open-air space, organized as a counter-concept to interior shooting and circulated in AV editing from the 1980s. An older slang term for outdoor sex, current since the postwar period, was reorganized at the dawn of AV into the genre name “outdoor genre.” In English, outdoor sex, public sex and dogging partly correspond; dogging, a British practice of group-witnessed sex in car parks and parks, is conceptually close to one derivative form of the Japanese outdoor genre (the group-witnessing type).

The outdoor as narrative device

The core device lies in two sensations the open air offers at once: release from enclosed space, and the unease of being witnessed by a third party. These opposing sensations proceed in parallel, and the intervention of uncontrollable elements (passers-by, weather, animals) that interiors lack becomes a device that generates the genre’s distinctive immediacy. The natural environment, season, weather and time of day are mobilized as narrative devices: a summer beach, a winter hot spring, a night forest, a park after rain, each carrying a scene-specific visual identification.

Outdoor shooting has a high affinity with the POV / self-shot format, because simplifying equipment raises the freedom of location choice and emphasizes a live feel in real space. The tendency of amateur and pick-up works to favour outdoor shooting derives from this.

Derivative forms

The park type stages urban parks, maximizing discovery tension with night or quiet parks. The sea-and-beach type stages the summer shore, with swimwear, tanning and fluids, released yearly as a summer mainstay. The camping-and-outdoor type stages tents and campsites, a derivative that grew with the 2020s outdoor boom, an enclosed outdoor middle ground. The forest-and-nature type stages quiet forests and riverbanks, allowing long-form development and favoured in self-shot and amateur works. The group-witnessing and public-play type stages a situation with several witnesses outdoors, corresponding to the English dogging and joining with public-play and exhibitionist work.

History

From the dawn of the AV industry, works using outdoor locations were produced continuously, positioned as a mainstay genre supplying visual variety distinct from interior shooting. In the 2000s, during the rise of amateur AV, the outdoor genre served as the main setting for pick-up and amateur work, with street pick-up developing into outdoor scenes as a standard form. Into the streaming era the genre has maintained steady demand, holding its place as a major AV category through outdoor-boom-linked derivatives and continuous supply in self-shot and amateur work.

Reception and ethical boundary

The core engine of pleasure is the dual structure of openness and the unease of discovery: the simultaneous offer of a release unavailable indoors and a transgression of social constraint. Readers and viewers consume the outdoor genre as a device to experience this transgression vicariously from a safe distance.

The outdoor genre directly touches a theme that may conflict with the real crime of public indecency (Penal Code Article 174), so its representational responsibility is continually questioned. In commercial work it is standard practice that the shooting site be private land, a permitted location, or a time band with low likelihood of third-party passage. The line between the real crime and the fictional device is a continuing point of debate; this entry confines itself to the cultural-historical description of the fictional genre and permitted shooting practice, and has nothing to do with affirming or recommending real criminal acts.
