Kubi Fetish (Neck Fetish)

As if luring you to within a fingertip’s reach, fine stray hairs sway over the skin. Kubi fetish (neck fetish) is the term for finding strong sexual or aesthetic appeal in the contour and skin of the neck, nape, and throat-line.
The composite pull of the neck
Compared to other body parts, the neck is a rare part that acts on all four registers of sight, touch, smell, and symbol. Visually, the line falling gently from neck to shoulder works as a slender column joining head and torso. Because slenderness and suppleness are expressed at once, it conveys both strength and fragility in an instant.
By touch, large vessels (the carotid artery, the jugular vein) run beneath the skin of the side of the neck, their pulsation perceptible from a fingertip or the lips. A part where the beat of life can be felt directly is one of very few on the body. To feel the pulse itself produces the intimacy peculiar to this part.
By smell, the side of the neck is a traditional place to apply perfume. The three points behind the ear, at the nape, and at the front of the neck run high in temperature, so fragrance rises easily there. As a source of scent perceptible only when one draws close, the neck has functioned as a symbol of sexual approach.
The lineage of nape culture
The neck fetish in Japan holds a distinct lineage nurtured within the culture of traditional dress. In Edo-period ukiyo-e, a depictive technique establishing the nape (the eriashi) of geisha and courtesans was established. The dressing technique of drawing the back collar low, “pulling the emon”, developed as a method of consciously showing the nape, and white powder on the neck became central to a geisha’s grooming. In the beauty prints of Utagawa Kunisada and Kitagawa Utamaro, some artists drew the three lines of the nape in fine detail.
In the modern era, while occasions for yukata and kimono have declined, the culture of showing the nape continues in changed form through hairstyles such as the bob, the short cut, and the up-do. In the beauty industry, “nape hair removal” and “collar-hair tidying” have settled as women’s grooming, and care to “show the nape beautifully” at pre-wedding photo shoots has become common.
Connection to biting
In speaking of the neck fetish, the desire for oral contact, biting and licking, cannot be avoided. Pressing the lips to the side of the neck, setting the teeth lightly, sucking hard to leave a kiss-mark: this run of conduct is shared across cultures worldwide as a sign of sexual possession and marking.
The “bite the neck” motif in vampire lore has been varied repeatedly as a metaphor of sexual contact since nineteenth-century gothic literature. From Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) onward, the act of blood-sucking functioned explicitly as a substitute representation of sexuality, and in contemporary girls’ manga and light novels the scene of “being bitten on the side of the neck” is frequently used as a metaphor of sexual awakening.
In live-action adult works too, caressing, kissing, and light-biting the side of the neck is built in as a stock expression of the foreplay scene, an important piece of conduct in the lead-in to a sex scene.
Adjacent tastes
The neck fetish, rather than completing itself alone, often exists compounded with interest in adjacent parts. Those who specially love the nape hold the independent name “nape fetish”, and the taste is bundled with adjacent parts: the collarbone, the Adam’s apple (in men), the shoulder, the hair. That chokers and necklaces win support among neck-fetish enthusiasts owes to their working as accessories that visually emphasise the neck’s contour.
The compatibility of pale-skin love with the neck fetish is especially high. The side of the neck, where veins faintly surface under near-translucent skin and the carotid pulses, is the part where the “delicacy of living flesh” idealised by the pale-skin fetish appears most plainly.
