Hentai Word Dictionary

The crack of an open palm on skin, then the slow reddening of the surface. Both the giver’s hand and the receiver’s voice begin to settle into a rhythm. The boundary between pain and pleasure sits in a place known only to the two participants; the third-party viewer reads it only when the rhythm breaks.

Overview

Spanking (Japanese loan: スパンキング, supankingu) is the BDSM impact-play category of striking the buttocks with an open palm or a flat implement. The English word derives from Middle English spanc (to strike). In contemporary BDSM and adult-media usage, it covers a spectrum from light, playful taps through to firmer impact play within negotiated scenes; it is one of the most-practiced impact-play forms within the wider BDSM scene.

As an adult-media category, spanking can be analysed at three levels: (1) standalone works that thematise the act itself; (2) elements within wider SM and choukyou (training) productions; and (3) playful elements (oshiri pen-pen) within otherwise non-BDSM work. The article addresses the first level principally but treats the three as a continuum.

All scenes discussed in this article are between consenting adult performers; spanking outside that frame, with non-consenting parties or with children, is a different matter governed by criminal law and not the subject of this entry.

Two registers

Discipline spanking

The discipline register places the giver in an authority role over the receiver, replaying existing power structures — household discipline, workplace hierarchy, teacher-student relations — within the physical practice. The internal logic of the scene supplies a justification: because you misbehaved, because you would not listen, to make you reflect. The justification frames the act and gives the scene its dramatic structure.

The discipline register overlaps with adjacent Japanese AV categories: jokyoushi (female teacher), gibo (stepmother), boss-subordinate, and training (choukyou) genres. The configuration of older-female giver / younger-male receiver — particularly under the chijo, jukujo, and stepmother labels — has formed a stable subgenre within Japanese discipline spanking work.

Affection spanking

The affection register places two partners on more equal terms and uses spanking as a pleasure-element within a wider sexual encounter: light strikes through stronger ones, used as a complement to foreplay, intercourse, or pre- and post-orgasm stimulation. The register treats consent and gradual escalation as the structural baseline, and in BDSM-aware work this is reflected in scene structures including agreed safewords, graduated intensity, and rest pauses.

Affection-register spanking has the broader audience: it requires less BDSM-specific orientation from the viewer and can be received as one option within the menu of stimulation, rather than as a distinctively BDSM practice.

Implements

Open hand

The most basic instrument is the open palm. Variations include full-palm strikes, fingertip strikes, and angled strikes; the open hand uniquely supports the strike-then-caress sequence within a single body part.

Paddle

The flat paddle is the most-developed Western spanking implement, made in wood, leather, or plastic, with rectangular, oval, or themed (heart-shaped) striking surfaces. The wider strike area delivers a more uniform impact than the palm at comparable force.

Hairbrush, shamoji, ping-pong paddle, ruler

Improvised household items are recurrent in discipline-register work. The hairbrush back, shamoji (rice paddle), ruler, and ping-pong paddle are conventionally selected from the implicit set of implements close to hand in a domestic or office setting, and the convention visually anchors the household-or-workplace setting in which the discipline framing is set.

Cane and whip

The long stiff cane and the multi-tail leather whip are higher-impact implements, used in more strongly BDSM-aligned work. The impact is sharper and the marks are linear, so this material more often combines with kinbaku or restraint in scene composition.

Anglophone history

Anglophone commercial spanking pornography developed from the 1960s and 1970s onward, with specialist publications, video labels, and clubs growing into an identifiable subculture distinct from the wider SM scene. The lineage runs back to nineteenth-century British public-school caning culture and its transformation into private fetish material; specialist magazines (Janus, others), the U.K. Fetlife spanking scene, and U.S. spanking-society networks have maintained the field as a distinct practice community over multiple generations.

The 1990s diffusion of the internet brought Anglophone spanking specialist material into wider international circulation, and Japanese audiences became aware of the Western specialist tradition as a distinct subgenre.

In Japanese AV

Import and parallel development

In the Japanese AV industry, spanking has historically been treated as one element within SM work rather than as an independent genre. From the late 1990s and 2000s onward, the influx of Western specialist work and the development of in-house specialisation by some SM labels produced a small but recurring set of dedicated Japanese spanking productions. The volume remains low compared with the Western specialist market, and within Japan spanking is more often consumed as one part of the wider SM, choukyou, or chijo menu.

Sub-patterns

Recurring patterns in Japanese AV spanking material include: chijo spanking (female aggressor in a chijo AV strikes the male submissive — a staple of M-male oriented work); training-frame spanking inside SM and choukyou work; school-frame spanking in jokyoushi (female-teacher) and blazer-uniform work; and stepfamily-frame spanking inside gibo and stepsister scenarios.

Dedicated specialist labels are limited; the SM club and SM salon services in the Japanese sex industry, however, typically carry spanking as one of the standard menu items.

Reception

Pain and pleasure

The taste for spanking, in BDSM commentary, layers several distinct registers: a taste for the pain itself (masochism); a taste for the act of striking (sadism); a taste for the after-warmth and numbness of the skin; a taste for the ritual structure of disciplinary spanking. Most reported preferences combine more than one of these registers.

Visual aftermath

The reddened skin, the palm-print, the linear weals — the visual aftermath of impact carries the fact that the act happened across the scene’s later frames. This makes spanking visually adjacent to other aftermath-of-act fetish images: post-fellatio mouth, post-ejaculation skin, tear-tracks. The category as a whole works on the principle that the act’s effect, persisting into the post-act image, becomes its own object of attention.

Sound and rhythm

The audio dimension is central: the rhythmic strike sound, the impact transient, the receiver’s voiced responses. Spanking material works as audio alone, and the ASMR and dōjin onsei market includes spanking-audio sub-categories that have no visual component.

Spanking practice within BDSM is governed by the standard BDSM consent frameworks — SSC, RACK, PRICK. The receiving partner holds an effective veto over scene continuation; safewords, graduated escalation, and aftercare are conventional elements of practice. The structural line between consensual play and non-consensual physical violence is the consent framework, and the consequences of crossing that line (criminal assault) place the unconsented act in an entirely separate legal and ethical category.
