VTubers and Erotic Content
✎ 本文編集 (admin) 🖼 画像編集 (admin)Beyond the streaming screen, a two-dimensional avatar sways, and at the moment the performer’s personality seeps through the gap between expression and voice, viewer desire takes aim. The character design is wholly drawn, but the breathing and the hesitations are those of a flesh-and-blood human, and that very dissonance becomes the trigger of arousal.
Overview
VTuber to ero kontentsu (VTuberとエロコンテンツ) is the umbrella term for the cultural field of adult fan creation, fan art, prose, and audio works themed on virtual YouTubers. This article is a neutral overview of the field and does not target any specific real VTuber. VTuber is the live-streaming culture that expanded explosively from 2017–2018 after the appearance of Kizuna AI in late 2016, denoting a form in which a flesh-and-blood performer (“the person inside”) streams through a two-dimensional character model. Major agencies such as Nijisanji and Hololive form the core of activity.
In the adult field, R-18 illustration by artists, doujinshi, erotic MMD video diverting standing art, and parody of situation voice circulate through pixiv, FANZA, and DLsite. Many major agencies restrict or prohibit adult expression in their fan-creation guidelines, so circulation in a grey zone has become routine.
Reception: the duality of image and voice
VTuber erotica holds a particular position because the object of desire is not monolithic. What draws the viewer is not only the cute character design but the laugh that slips out during streaming, the intelligence and quirks visible in chatter, and the personality that rises from exchanges with the comment section. It is a structure where support for a flesh-and-blood female idol and moe for a two-dimensional character are overlaid, and sexual fantasy too unfolds in a form wavering across the boundary of the two.
Beginning with ASMR streams and cuddle and ear-cleaning audio streams, desire tied directly to “the voice of the person inside” grows, and fan-creation illustration and manga give it a body as a character. In the viewer’s mind, the familiar voice and the familiar expression assemble into a single existence, an object of fantasy of an intensity that neither image alone nor voice alone could produce.
History
The first generation and the dawn of fan creation (2017–2018)
The early VTuber group called the “Four Heavenly Kings” had R-18 illustration posted to pixiv soon after their appearance, and doujinshi distribution at Comic Market began. At Comic Market in summer 2018 the VTuber genre surged.
The Nijisanji and Hololive period (2019–2021)
Nijisanji, founded in 2018, and Hololive, founded in 2017, established a streaming-centred “liver” culture, and the closeness to viewers and the length of streaming time accelerated the fan-creation fervour. Certain Hololive characters appeared constantly near the top of pixiv’s R-18 tag, and around 2021 the VTuber genre at doujin events grew to a scale alongside yuri and otome games.
Official guidelines and the grey zone (2020–)
Cover (operator of Hololive) sets adult expression as in principle prohibited in its fan-creation guidelines, and Anycolor (operator of Nijisanji) has similar restrictions. Meanwhile a practice of “tacit tolerance unless explicitly reported as a violation” continues, and a large gap has arisen between guidelines and actual circulation. At doujin events, on DLsite doujin audio, and on FANZA doujin, works with original settings evoking VTubers are distributed in great quantity.
Derived fields
The situation-voice line “what if a VTuber became your girlfriend” increased continuous with the situation-voice genre, with whisper and close-contact works in VTuber-character specification circulating constantly on DLsite. The individual and underground line, where performers are former AV actresses or former gravure models, includes cases of officially or semi-officially sanctioned R-18 streams and audio works, with a closeness near underground-idol culture. The MMD and 3D-model erotic-video line, diverting Live2D or VRoid Studio models, is deleted early from YouTube but continues to circulate via other platforms, positioned as a forerunner of AI-generated erotic video.
Legal and contractual points
Three layers exist at once: portrait rights, copyright, and agency guidelines, a field with no clear “legal line.” Performers themselves sometimes encounter R-18 fan creation through ego-searching and mention it on stream, so the three parties of subject, operator, and fan carry a tense relationship. Since the 2022 AV Law, as caution over the contractual side of adult appearance advances, a problem is also raised regarding the structure whereby “the performer does not appear in AV but is effectively consumed through fan creation.”
